Guided Search

November 10, 2006

I know what the mystery molecule is.

I didn’t find it for myself, but was heavily guided there by Peter Corbett. It turns out that a non-chemist could do the right things to reduce the search domain, only a chemist would have a eureka when the right solution appeared.

On a related note, Andy Powell describes his admiration of Intute’s Virtual Training Suite technology. The chemistry tutorial seems out of date, but the updated tutorials such as archaeology look great. Especially check out the discovery section – where the tutorial guides you through using a search engine in an IFrame. It strikes me there are plenty of applications for a similar approach in our area of chemoinformatics; there’s a lot of tacit knowledge in how to use the resources that exist effectively that needs to be brought out.
